UniFi - Access Point: Creating 2.4GHz/5GHz only networks

Modified on Wed, 11 Jan, 2023 at 2:35 PM

In some scenarios, you may want to have 2G and 5G devices connecting on their own respective networks to avoid slower devices impacting performance on the WiFi. You can find our article here UniFi - Controller: WiFi name/password change on how to create a new wireless network.

To configure your SSIDs to be on the 2.4GHz or 5GHz radio, please see the instructions below:

Go to Settings > WiFi > Select the WiFi Network or Create New Network

Set Advanced Configuration to Manual. Then select WiFi Band depending on what frequency you want to run.

The access point will show as Getting Ready status whilst the changes are being made and will connect once it has finished.

You can create SSIDs that broadcast specific radio frequencies for situations like:
- IoT-only networks: It is recommended to have IoT devices like Ring devices, Sonos, etc. on a separate 2.4GHz-only network
- Speed testing: To test the full capabilities of your network, you will need to use the 5GHz network as this will provide the best speeds
- Compatibility: In rare scenarios, some wireless devices can only connect to a certain radio frequency
